As the country grapples with the issue of economic stability, President Ranil Wickremesinghe urged political parties, including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and Janatha Vimukti Peramuna (JVP), to collaborate with the government in safeguarding the country’s economic stability by ensuring the success of the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Wickremesinghe also announced several other measures for safeguarding the economy of the country, which include an increase in the daily wage of plantation workers to SLR 1,700 (£4.58). While addressing the rally of the United National Party (UNP) on the occasion of Labour Day on May 1, he emphasised the importance of not disrupting the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and preventing the 2022 episode of economic collapse. Under the theme of “A proud Nation that will never fall again,” the rally saw a significant turnout of people with expectations, including affiliates of the United National Party.

As a government, we have consistently prioritised the welfare of plantation workers. I empathise deeply with their challenges and understand their needs. Therefore, I, as the President, affirm my commitment to safeguarding the rights of plantation workers under my leadership.

Wickremesinghe also attended the rally of CWC, where he was welcomed by CWC leader Senthil Thodaman and General Secretary Minister Jeevan Thondaman. In collaboration with the Prime Minister and Minister Jeevan Thondaman, we’ve deliberated on legally designating these ‘line rooms’ as villages. This designation will grant them access to the same facilities enjoyed by rural villages.

Wickremesinghe also emphasised the democratic and economic resurgence evident in the country. He noted the symbolic return of the opposition leader, previously barred from Galle Face, who is now holding his party’s May Day rally at Chatham Street.

Additionally, the President pledged to unveil a comprehensive plan aimed at fostering a robust export economy, thereby ensuring a promising future for the nation’s youth.

Wickremesinghe addressed the previous issue and other political parties in his speech: “In gratitude to all who joined our May Day rally, we defy predictions of demise, reviving an economy once burdened. Like in 1956 and 1970, when the UNP triumphed against odds, today we rise again. Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake’s strategic timing in establishing the UNP and granting independence to Sri Lanka exemplifies our commitment to auspicious moments for the nation’s benefit. Such dedication elevates us above challenges, ensuring our role in shaping a resilient future for Sri Lanka.”

Wickremesinghe pointed out that the opposition leader should have taken over the country’s leadership during the crisis, however, he turned it down during the crisis by not taking over the country and its responsibility. He added, “I was the leader of a party that only had one seat in Parliament. However, I took over responsibility, and UNP never runs away from challenges.”

But with a happy face, Wickremesinghe said that he was happy to see the cutouts of various parties, such as the SLPP and NPP, at Mardana Junction, which portrayed the democracy of the country.

Now, the focus is on advancing development in these areas. Consequently, we’re directing efforts towards infrastructure development by augmenting wages. Furthermore, it’s worth emphasising that the agricultural modernisation program is not confined solely to rural areas but extends to the plantation sector as well.”
