Tamil communities in India and Sri Lanka on Wednesday were celebrating Thai Pongal, a Hindu harvest festival.

Devotees offered gifts, prayed in temples and cooked the Pongal dish, as per tradition during this annual festival. Pongal is made from the first rice of the year’s first harvest mixed with milk, sugarcane and jaggery.

The harvest festival is celebrated by Tamilians around the world and is aimed at giving thanks to the sun and weather to help ensure a fruitful harvest.
