SRI Lanka airlifted fresh consignments of the Chinese-made Sinopharm vaccine on Sunday (8) as the death toll from Covid-19 went past the 5,000-mark in the south Asian nation.

Two Sri LankanAirlines planes with 1.86 million doses of the vaccine arrived in Colombo from Beijing, Daily Mirror reported.

With the latest arrivals, Sri Lanka has so far received 14.7 million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine as the country has been fighting a surge in the pandemic.

It reported 2,815 fresh infections on Saturday (7), taking the total to 327,038 so far and 98 new deaths took the fatalities above 5,000, according to Worldometers data.

The new wave comes after the government relaxed restrictions in April to allow celebrations of the traditional Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

Authorities, however, have now tightened the curbs as hospitals have been struggling to cope with the influx of patients.
