General election campaign ends at midnight on Aug. 2

The 2020 parliamentary election campaign must end at midnight on August 2, Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said. Campaigning is not allowed during the 48 hours before the polls.

After the conclusion of the campaigning activities, the election campaign is not allowed in the electronic and print media also on August 03 and 04.

The Chairman of the Elections stated that however, no more than five persons will be able to go house to house on August 03 to conduct the election campaign. He said that since the Parliamentary Select Committee had agreed not to hold a silent period, leaflets could be distributed from house to house during the silent period.

He also requested not to carry out election campaigns under the guise of religious programs to be held at religious places on July 31, August 01 02 and 03.

However, the distribution of pamphlets in a manner that is not displayed in public places will not be prohibited, the Election Commission said.
